Beta with injured pectoral fin, now swollen?

By Planet Wealth

I posted a question earlier today (see link below) about a new Beta with an injured pectoral fin.

The side with the injured fin is now quite terribly swollen, and he’s very lethargic.

I’m plotting to call the place I brought him tomorrow (stupid closing at 5pm… it should be 24 hour trading, lol) but is there anything I can do now?

Yes, I know, I sound like a panicky parent. But my last Beta died after 4 days and I’m incredibly paranoid now.

He was in a cup by himself when I brought him, and he’s alone in his tank now. I’m pretty sure the fin hurt happened when he was netted and place into the plastic bag, but I can’t say for sure.
I did thoroughly inspect him for hurt/signs of illness at the shop, and I wouldn’t have brought him if I saw any… but I can’t rule out that I missed the immobile fin.

He wasn’t swollen yesterday (I checked him out with a torch when I noticed the fin).

I’ve also been doing 20% water changes ever 24 hours because he’s producing enough slime to leave cloudy residue ontop of the water.
I’m sorry I didn’t reckon I had to point out that I only wanted answers THAT DON’T INVOLVE KILLING THE FISH!

lots of TLC and crossed fingers, it sounds like he had a run in with another fish, and sounds like he had some internal hurt, how severe it’s hard to tell.

keep his water squeeky clean, if it’s not filtered to at least bi-weekly water changes. internal injuries are very hard to treat, but you could give him a dose of melafix (half dose for bettas, they can’t handle a full dose, read the packet) which will at least sooth any external hurt and his pectoral.

add some aquarium salt too, this is a excellent tonic for ill fish and works surprisingly well to perk them up.

but sadly if he’s had severe internal injuries theres not much hope for him! does the fish store keep their bettas with other fish? if so, next time find one thats been kept alone!

I’m not sure how to solve your problem but if you post on this forum, http://www.bettaforums.com
they could probably give you more help. I post there when I have betta problems.
