Do I need the trainer name to trade (via wifi) on Pokemon Pearl?

When I started the game a few days ago I wrote my name and place the wee heart icon in it. When I want someone to add me to their pal pad so we can trade, do they need this part? Or is it just the right number?

And is it possible to change my trainer name without using AR?

    You need to know his/her friend code.
