do you think that we will see a day when footy clubs are privately owned?

By Planet Wealth

as you know. when the sydney swans first started they where owned by dr eldisten. i reckon i spelt his name correctly. and the bears where part owned by paul cronin,of matlock police fame. and max christmas. a gold coast real estate entrepreneur. these teams are no longer in the hands of these people. but do you see a day when footy clubs could be privately owned again.

the reason why i have posted this question is in responce to a question about salary cap breaches. and how they are a restraint of trade for any footy club. that is trying to run as a business. and stay in the black.
cheers.

I reckon Ruben pellerman who owned all the pubs on the gold coast owned the bears at one stage didn’t he.

To answer your question, No i wouldn’t like to see clubs owned again, it makes it too much like the IPL and NFL, NBA and NHL. When are people going to realise we are a small country in terms of population and our main footy league the AFL would be crap if it went the way of private ownership, admission prices would soar, salary caps would make it unfair on the sides who weren’t privately owned, private owners would buy all the better players, so on and son on, i hope it stays the way it is.

I have no doubt that time will come. Other clubs in Australia are privately owned eg Russell Crowe – South Sydney and, although this may sound immediately irrelevant, so are massive clubs all around the world eg USA, EPL clubs.

Footy clubs don’t really make money, they are a playground for the rich (at least in other countries). Truth is many clubs wouldn’t exist today if they weren’t propped up by some rich dude living out his dream so if a Nth Melbourne or similar were on the verge of financial collapse I can certainly see them being bought by someone.

But I don’t reckon they run it as a business. Most owners want to be king of the playground, profit is kinda irrelevant. What dream team is to us is what the real comp is to Abramovic, Gillett, Hicks etc.

i hope not it would be the end of many smaller clubs
if we got rid of the salary cap it would go the way of english soccer
you would pay a hell of a lot more to see a game
eg Chelsea home games $200 per game if you can get a ticket

A sort of Formula 1 AFL eh ?
Sydney Red Bulls V Melbourne McLarens or
    Freemantle Ferraries V Brisbane Bennetons
or maybe the V8 AFL version
    GMH Geelong V Ford Freo
    maybe a grocery version
    Coles Cats V Western Woolies
or Kraft Kildas V Cottees Collywobbles
ENUF ENUF — back to your padded cell Lexi.

(THAT level of commercialism privately owning & controlling clubs ? NEVER !! )
