How do you do this math problem?
By Planet Wealth
Anthony and Bruce are renting a small, two bedroom house. Each man’s share of the rent is based on the floor area of his bedroom. The floor area of Anthony’s bedroom is 12 m2 (metre square) and the floor area of Bruce’s bedroom is 9m2
What fraction of the total bedroom floor area is the floor area of Anthony’s room?
I would prefer if you showed me how to do it, as I am trying to learn not just get the answer.
thanks ![]()
when i type
12 divided by 21 on the calculater it comes up with this:
0.571428571

Just imagine the question. you have a two bedroom house. Anthony’s floor area=12 m2, and that of Bruce’s 9 m2.
Now we want to know what fraction of the total floor area is the floor area of Anthony, right?
for example, if we assume that Anthony’s area was 9 and Bruce’s was 9. then intuitively, we know that Anthony’s room constitutes half the total area. Mathematically, what we did was diving Anthony’s area by the total are: 9/(9+9)=1/2
in our case, we will do the same: divide Anth. area by the total area
fraction= 12/ (12+9) = 12/21 = 4/7

Total bedroom floor area= 21m2.
Anthony’s floor area = 12 m2
Hence the ratio = 12/21 = 4/7

First get the total area = 12 + 9 = 21 m²
For Anthony’s share, divide his area by total = 12 / 21 = 4 / 7
For Bruce, = 9 / 21 = 3 / 7
Add the to fractions and you have 3/7 + 4/7 = 7/7 = 21 / 21 (Total / total)

total area=12+9=21
fraction=12/21=4/7

Bruce’s area 9
Anthony’s area +12
Total Area 21
Bruce’s percentage 9/21 = 42.86%
Anthony’s percentage +12/21 = 57.14%
Total percentage 21/21= 100.00%

Total bedroom area = 12 + 9 = 21 m^2
Anthony ‘s share will be 12/21 = 4/7 = 0.57 or 57%
Bruce’s share will be 9/21 = 3/7 = 0.43 or 43%
