In the USA, no its not possible. "register for an online trading account" and "buy and sell shares on your own" is still using a broker (not an individual person assigned to you but a discount brokerage company). Zecco.com is one. If you have a minimum of $2500 to invest, they offer 10 free trades per month. Less that $2500, they charge $4.50 per trade.

You can use this Stocks & Shares search box to find exactly what you’re looking for – it’s a ‘custom search engine’ by Google where we have scoured the web for the very best stock market web sites and included them in this search engine – so you only get highly relevant stock market search results, instead of millions of unrelated pages to wade through. Give it a try now!

It’s really not possible without a broker but don’t worry……it’s not expensive like it used to be……….Belldirect is the lowest cost online broker in Australia I know of….about $15
