the real metric you want to look at is the value of shares traded and not the number of shares… because if 20 million penny shares like (SDL) go through the market it has the same value as 22k Rio shares trading…
Anyway the value of shares traded today on the ASX was 4222mln USD which is 11% higher than the average so far this year.
Highest value traded this year was 5699mln USD.
