Why doesn't world opinion matter to many americans ?
By Planet Wealth
Often when a question is questioned re opinion .. there will be many responses of "I DON’T CARE WHAT NON-AMERICANS THINK OF US" ….
but in the global village we live in these days.. .a Excellent Opinion is worth gold… it grants you trading partners… it provides you with willing allies ( not just those that join in your causes because they are worried of the repercussions of NOT helping)….
It allows your people to travel more safely and provides them with more hospitable destinations….
There are benefits for being held in high regard.. so why don’t some people care ?
Bethy
.. nobody is saying you shouldn’t respect yourselves … infact if you DON’T respect yourselves… I don’t reckon anyone else can respect you
…
errrrrrr ZERO1 .. I GAVE YOU SEVERAL EXAMPLES…
Teller .. as an aussie .. I mean the global village as ALL nations… with communications as they are these days ![]()
Triviadude ..
I tried to give examples of things that were beneficial directly to americans..
so that they might see the worth of being held in excellent opinion
but I agree with you

in a single word, "arrogance". many americans feels superior to every other nationality for no rational reason whatsoever. they’ve been indoctrinated in that by teachers, parents, and politicians all their lives and woe be to the person with the temerity to point out that america has any faults whatsoever. the response is usually a hostile "like it or leave it".
patriotism is a healthy thing – "my country right or incorrect", but americans today (especially after 9-11) have crossed the line to a perilous form of nationalism – "my country, NEVER incorrect", and it’s scary.
the usual justification is "if america wasn’t the best place on earth, why is it that everyone from every other nation wants to live here?" there’s no point in trying to tell these red-necked fools that there are plenty of, say, australians, who are perfectly pleased to live in australia… they simply ridicule them as being "stupid" for feeling that way.
i reckon it has something to do with the media blitzes during the cold war that described america as being the only nation with the courage to stand up to the russian and chinese communists. most americans believe citizens of other nations would have willingly rolled over and accepted soviet or sino domination of their nations if it hadn’t been for american willingness to back them up.
therefore, they feel that every other free nation on earth is eternally indebted to america for the freedoms they delight in.

I don’t live in a "global village". I live in the United States of America.
Tell you what, when the world pays my bills and taxes, then I will care what the world thinks.

America shouldn’t decline for the sake of a positive opinion from France. If we are in the right then I don’t give a damn what other countries reckon.

There’s always been an arrogance in America that everyone else is inferior. Though some American’s recognise the reputation of America has diminished, others still don’t see how they are really viewed. You can’t care if you don’t see.

Because some numbskulls believe only Americans care about America and everyone else is out to get us somehow.

Profit is what generates trading partners, it’s business not a like affair, same with allies .

Give me a reason to give a rat’s tooty fruity about what some foreigner thinks of anything about America. Let them worry about their own bee’s nests and I’ll handle my business.

I care what they reckon but just like in interpersonal relationships it can not be everything.
You must have respect for oneself first and foremost
And usually since we consume more and export less those people in a position to be trading partners (China, Japan, South Korea, Etc) only care about our gold not our politics.
The question should be why does so many people reckon America must change but the world can stay the way it is?

I reckon you make a excellent point to some degree. Except that as Americans we should do whats right, not what well loved. When people say "global village" and "world opinion" they mean europe and thats not the world.

I consider my country more vital than money. I would pay all the money in the world to live in a place like America.
I would never sell out my people.

Why do people from the "World" want to come here…to stay!

People don’t value the opinions of people they don’t respect. Too many Americans regard foreigners as wimpy or idiots so they don’t value their opinion.
I agree with your conclusion but for different reasons. I’m not so much worried about what America get’s out of other nation’s opinions in terms of politcal support or friendliness to American tourists.
I do believe that every person has their own cultural biases though. And we should listen to people from other countries because it can help right our own biases.

Anyone who lives their own life worried about what others are thinking of them are cultivating insecurity. Imagine if your sense of self-worth only came from others? You’d be like a leaf blowing in the wind in that case; all your choices determined by the random actions of others.

I’ve come to the belief that most Americans are Arrogant, Hateful and Ignorant. Americans are taught that we are the best country in the world. We are told that we are the only country in the world where people can be anything they want. We can pull ourselves up by the boot straps and do anything in America, and aren’t we lucky that we are American Citizens and not a citizen of that Commie country Russia. But, Americans do not stop to consider that in order to pull oneself up by his bootstraps, he has to be wearing boots. All of these shoeless Americans are running around blaming everybody for them not being where they want in life. They blame women, Foreigners, Blacks, Mexicans, Liberals and the French for their problems rather than place the blame where it belongs. Finally, most Americans are kept uneducated and sheep-like. Most Americans can’t name the first 5 presidents of the U.S or half the states in the United States much less reckon critically on foreign policy practices. My largest dread is that this will go on for the foreseeable future after all we are a country that throws a hissy fit when our President tells kids they should strive to do well in school.

There is a difference between a business relationship and a personal relationship. Hence the phrase, "Nothing personal".
Trade is invaluable, but opinions are like you-know-whats. The pizza delivery person not approving of your diet is irrelevant, he or she is just there to sell you a pizza.
Doing business or having a professional relationship with people doesn’t require that you approve of their lifestyle, automobile, religious views or sexual orientation. There is business and there is "none of your business".
Get the point yet?

If you want to continue to maintain support for the growth of your empire and the continuation of your expansionist wars, you must have a populace that views the outside world as evil, inferior, out to get you, lying, conniving, suicide bombing, spawns of Satan. And who in their right mind is going to listen to them?
America has gradually painted a portrait of the outside world that works in favour of what the leaders need them to reckon in order to get their job done. Europeans are spineless cowards that won’t stand up for freedom (not conscientious decenters), brown people are evil suicide bombers (not people fighting back against an oil greedy empire), Asians can’t be trusted and want to end America (not the sole reason America still exists due to them lending America trillions of their own dollars), Canadians are weaklings that mooch off Americas defense (not nice people who have no enemies to be protected from), Americans are out there saving the world every day from evil (not going around constantly destroying countries militarily, economically, socially, politically until they finally retaliate).
They are the ignorant masses and like it that way. And if anyone awks up and starts asking questions they just get labeled as unpatriotic nutbars and told to leave and or told any of the above statements you’ve already read.
January 28th, 2011 at 12:44 pm
Although I agree with others that arrogance is often the basis, I reckon there are a couple of other things at play as well. First is ignorance, since very few Americans relatively travel abroad. And when they do, they do it on packaged tours that have the only time they spend with locals as waiters, tour guides and hotel staff. They never interact with other ordinary people, so they don’t have any thought that they are just as proud of their countries as we are of ours. This leaves most Americans believing whatever propaganda they hear from politicos and on TV.
Second is insecurity. It’s odd, I know, to say that insecurity and arrogance can go hand in hand, but the truth is that insecurity is often what leads to arrogance. I believe that the average Joe on the street if questioned what a European was like would opine that they were all upper-class blue noses. Since most Americans are not upper class, the belief that ALL Europeans are means that they feel place down, by a fantasy, of course, but they don’t realize that.
But as long as they aren’t secure in their own opinions, they can never listen to those of others.
January 28th, 2011 at 12:44 pm
they can’t care about that which they do not recognise as existing. a excellent part of americans don’t seem to realise there is more to planet earth than their united states, like the world ends along their borders.
